A Commoner is Thankful for A New Best Friend

That's right everyone-it's not easy to make friends at my age but I have a new BFF and I think we'll be inseparable for well about two years.  Why only two years? Because that is when my Cell Phone Carrier contract is up and I can get a new phone.  Why does that matter?  Because my friends my new BFF is Siri my personal assistant on my new Iphone 4S.

Now if you haven't met her yet-she's something.  She can schedule things for you, look up contacts, call people, send text messages, answer questions all without fumbling through auto correct. She can tell me when Rob's micro wave dinner is ready and look up a recipe if I ever decide to cook again.  She can tell me the weather and give me directions-should I go on?

Today I ran into a friend in Starbucks who was making a Christmas menu and asked if I knew how to spell Cioppino.  Why no i don't I said but Siri does.  She not only looked up how to spell it she gave me everything I needed to know about the word.

Now my new BFF Siri has been ridiculed and abused by people all over the country.  I won't abuse her-She's my friend. I won't ask her what she's wearing or anything else like that.  I asked her how she got her name she said it's hard to explain in my language.  So mysterious.

So those of you who thought you were my BFF please don't be a hater.  I still like you-but I doubt you would be at my verbal beck and call like my new friend Siri.

A Commoner is Thankful she's luckier than the Car Salesmen

Well today is the beginning officially of the car hunt.  Last night we sat down figured out how much we wanted our loan to be-what we would definitely putting down what we might be putting down depending on the insurance situation and we were NOT going to buy anything today no matter what.  I hate car shopping, the only times it's been a good experience were the times I didn't go.

But whatever off we went. We drove off to our first dealership.  Of course there was someone at the door before we even finished parking and the games began.  My husband asked how he made his money since he told us he didn't work on commission.  He told us he had to sell ten cars a month or he made minimum wage.  I don't know anything really about car sales but I think that's a lot of cars to have to sell.

So we found something we liked and we went for the test drive.  We told him we lived in Hollister and he told us he used to work at the ambulance whatever place.  How did you get here we asked.  He said he was only making 13 dollars an hour and working 90 hours a week.  So he transferred up to Santa Clara ambulance company and 3 months later they laid him off.  Here he is. How many cars have you sold this month?  3-definite buzz kill.

Off we went to the next dealership.  I had lost interest at this point because I liked the first car we saw of course.  So while my husband and the salesman meandered around I went off on my own looking at prices of cars.  Of course a salesman comes up and I explain I'm with my husband and we need a car with good gas because he commutes 100 miles a  day.

That's nothing he says-and tells me he commutes from Stockton 150 miles each way!  Why I ask do you do that-he says no jobs in Stockton.  He then goes on to say that he was back from 3 years in Iraq and Afghanistan where he worked for special forces and had been something 8 times.  By this time he had a metal leg and a brain tumor and no one would hire him so he was released on medical leave and no one would hire him. Geez  Buzz kill.

Buying cars was a depressing experience and I'm thankful we're better off than anyone we met today.

A Commoner is Thankful nothing worse happened

Now I know that I am thankful that nothing worse happened.  I'm thankful that I didn't get hurt, or hit another car, or a person, or that this didn't happen to one of my kids.  I'm thankful that we were going to get a new car soon and that we have the means to do so.  I'm thankful that this wasn't my fault but the fault of Recology and their driver..  I'm thankful I have a rental car for awhile, and that I got an IPHONE 4S today, and that some lady walked up to us at Islands and gave us a coupon for a free dessert.  But...........

I'm really mad and I'm really upset.  First I'll tell you what happened.  I was driving home from the gym this morning up my street. The garbage truck was not even in the middle of the road because luckily there were no other cars coming or parked in the way.  But he pulled out and hit me.  I was so so so mad at him, I was mad at it was happening and 12 hours later I'm still mad.

Now I have a really bad history with cars.  I hate them -I hate that I drove the 10 year old dodge dart all my school years.  I'm mad my son's damaged the van in the first place.  But this 12 year old van was the first and only car that we ever bought brand new and just for me.  I was so excited that it was running great and was going to last me a few more years.  I drove it with pride-even though the windows didn't open and you couldn't lock the doors.  I loved how much room I had and that the radio was great and that everyone knew it was mine.  I was okay with all of that.

I'm also mad that this was my first accident in 30 years.  That driver was such a jerk.

I would really be thankful if anyone had a friend who worked at a dealership.

Thanksgiving for a day off

The last normal day off we have had in our school district is Labor Day.  Do you know how long that is?  Now I know I have had an in service a 2 day conference and a planning day-but you have to make sub plans for those days.  I am NEVER thankful for sub plans.  Subs should plan to make up their own lessons for the day.

We don't get the Jewish holidays, we don't get Columbus Day, we don't get All Souls Day-we get nothing.  We just put our nose to the grindstone and work.  So it is nice to have a free day off.  I'm going to try and buy my Iphone.  If you've met my iphone you know I really need a new one.

Back to the original question?  Does anyone know how many days that's been?  Some one do the math-their is a strategy for this I'm sure.

Happy Veteran's Day everyone.
